Head of Engineering
Purpose:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Engineering to lead our maintenance department. The successful candidate will oversee a team of mechanical, electrical, and maintenance staff, ensuring the efficient and safe operation of all industrial equipment and built environment assets. This role is crucial in maintaining the highest standards of health and safety and ensuring compliance with the latest certifications.
Reporting and Compliance:
- Provide monthly activity reports detailing completed jobs and outstanding actions.
- Highlight and report any non-compliance issues related to engineering or the built environment.
- Ensure safe and compliant management of all maintenance and engineering services.
- Maintain accountability for meeting statutory and regulatory obligations.
- Complete and update all relevant risk assessments.
- Escalate and manage risks and issues within the department and across the business.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Build and maintain an effective engineering team to support long-term business goals.
- Delegate tasks effectively to team members.
- Promote engineering best practices and actively participate in the Senior Management Team (SMT).
- Organise training for staff to ensure compliance with the latest standards.
- Communicate maintenance concerns to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and SMT.
Maintenance & Operations:
- Oversee and participate in the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
- Conduct regular site inspections and identify areas needing additional maintenance.
- Schedule and supervise external maintenance workers, ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.
- Coordinate with various departments to plan maintenance and shutdown activities.
- Review and provide feedback on preventative maintenance schedules.
- Oversee equipment installation processes.
Project Management:
- Demonstrate strong project management skills and work with the SLT to identify priorities.
- Lead sustainability initiatives related to energy, water, and steam.
- Develop strategies to support homegrown engineering solutions and reduce external spend.
Budget & Resource Management:
- Manage maintenance budgets and costs.
- Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with contractors.
- Control and monitor inventory and spare parts to minimize downtime.
- Ensure compliance with service schedules for gas, water/steam, electrical, and fixed assets.
- Estimate costs for maintenance projects and monitor expenditure.
Strategic Initiatives:
- Identify opportunities for synergy across the business to promote best practices and cost efficiencies.
- Focus on risk management for machinery, emphasising longevity and preventative maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good understanding of PUWER and LOLER regulations.
- Strong knowledge of engineering concepts, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
- Awareness of the latest qualifications required for maintenance staff compliance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Qualifications and Training:
- Engineering degree, chartership, or HND preferred.
- Knowledge or awareness of CMMS.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Health & Safety (IOSHH/NEBOSH).
